A few local people, including Reggie Boyd, Jerry Dobson, Sam Ferguson and George Adams, had been flying model aeroplanes at various sites, mainly farmers fields, since the late 60s. Although these modellers occasionally got together to fly, they had not got a permanent flying site and thus had never formed a club. Sam had flown free-flight models in, what is now our Club flying site, Millar's Field which is owned by Sydney Millar, a dairy farmer. Sydney's son, Glenn, had become interested in flying, having watched some models being flown in his father's field and in 1982 he got his own radio controlled model. Glenn was being taught to fly by George Adams and also by Dennis McNeill of the Banbridge Aeromodelling Club. The now regular flying in Millar's Field, attracted the attention of other potential modellers from the surrounding area. Sydney made everyone welcome and encouraged them to come along with their models and fly in his field. Thus Millar's Field becam ea centre for modelling in the Dungannon area. Over the next few years, the numbers swelled to around twenty and a close association built up with the Banbridge Aeromodelling Club, because a few of the Dungannon lads were members of the Banbridge Club. The Banbribge boys were invited to join us for a fly in at our field one September and so successful was it that it turned into an annual event. Each year our 'Open Day' as it became known attracted more and more people. Modellers from other clubs all over Northern Ireland, Microlite Pilots, Stationary engine enthusiasts, Model Engineers with their steam engines and loads of people from the local community came along and our Open Day has now turned into one of the largest modelling events in Northern Ireland. In 1991, a deputation from the British Model Flying Association came to Northern Ireland and held a meeting which was attended by a large number of modellers. This purpose of this was to encourage modellers and clubs to affiliate to the BMFA and enjoy all the benefits, including insurance, that came with membership. The following week the modellers at Millar's Field, who until now had not officially formed a club, got together and formed the Dungannon Model Flying Club which immediately affiliated to the BMFA. Our flying site is still at Millar's field and we are pleased to say that Sydney makes us very welcome and shows a keen interest in our club. |
